Wiring Fantastic Fan Question

Hello everyone. I have an 04 Outfitter Apex 8 and need to replace the vent above the bed with a Fantastic Fan. Can anyone tell me where I can find the 12 volt wiring to connect it to? Never done anything like this before. Did a search of the forum and no help. Would really appreciate some direction.

Thanks, Marty
  • Is the current vent powered? If not, then it is doubtful that any wiring is there to power the Fantastic Fan. Twelve volts will have just two wires- a positive and a negative. Remove the current vent, and everything around it both inside and out. reach as far as you can under the ceiling and maybe there is wiring. If not, then you can run wires from a ceiling light close by.
  • ok, the current vent is not powered. there are 2 lights....one on each side up at the head of the bed. I'm hoping when I remove the vent, I will see a space between the inside of the roof and the outside?
  • I had an old 4 ft. whip antenna and was able to push it in between the inside ceiling and insulation to the nearest light. Taped the new wire to it and pulled it back to the opening. An electrical fish tape would also work well, just remember to tape the end so that is doesn't tear the insulation up when pulling it back through.

    Good Luck,
  • I put one in my new TT and I just used a stiff RC airplane control wire to push my electrical wires to a near by light fixture. worked great
  • thanks for the replies everyone. One other question.....is silicon the best sealant to use around the outside of the vent on the roof to keep water out? I'm talking about as a final step, in addition to the universal installation kit I have with the sticky gasket.

    Thanks again.

Not only no, but hell no. :) Don't ever use silicon. I recommend that you use Dicor lap sealant. You can buy it at any RV parts store like Camping World. I've installed four fan-tastic vents over the years and maintained even more and have found that works best.
  • Did the same thing. The old vent leaked which caused the ceiling frame to rot. I had to build a new frame to mount the fan on. I also built an interior frame to sandwich in the aluminum roof skin and reinforce the ceiling. I wired the Fantastic fan to the nearest ceiling light. Suggest you test the fan before closing up the patient. I used caulking called STREATCH to seal around the fan.
  • Another caution against using silicone, Don't. Dicor self leveling caulk if on EPDM roof.
Myself I also used butyl tape instead of the included foam gasket. Making it primary seal instead of relying on external caulking. Don't over tighten screws, going 'round and 'round allowing tape to ooze (better if warm). Ill usually let set overnight then trim butyl before caulking. Why FF recommends silicone is beyond me-
