Yes, a bad connection can cause this. But I had the same symptoms, and it did indeed turn out to be a bad battery. Removed the battery, saw the terminals were clean and tight, took battery to be tested, and sure enough, it showed fully charged, but the voltage collapsed when any load, however small, was applied. New battery, problem solved.
Of course, check the simple/cheap fix first, but be prepared to spring for a new battery.
