Symptoms of HEUI pump failure?

Today while climbing a long grade Eastbound on I26 about 36 miles before Asheville, NC I was at about 2300 RPM IN 2nd gear topped out at 32 mph. Before and after that I was climbing grades at as high as 65 mph, no problem. I have a 350 hp Cat C7 in a 36' Wiinnebago Journey,  flat towing a 4000 Jeep.
I'm not familiar with the roads here. Is this normal for this road in this type rig?
Thanks
  • My HEUI pump started having issues and had to be replaced. My symptoms were there just when I started out. It would take a few minutes before the engine would respond to the throttle when starting out. But, once it started responding, it was fine from that point forward. Thank goodness I had it checked out and it never totally failed.
  • That climb on I-26 from SC into NC and on into Asheville, is a killer. It is one of the steepest climbs I have encountered on and Interstate and that includes a LOT of traveling in Colorado and other parts of the Rockies.

  • I have driven that route several times. I start the climb at 65+ MPH. As soon as the Cat slows down to about 50, I down shift to 4 gear and then leave it to the Allison. I top out at 40 plus.

  • Thanks for the replys. My mind is at ease now.

  • Sounds about right for that part of the country our 40' Tiffin with 350HP C-7 does about the same towing our 2014 Flex.
  • I believe that was normal. Dont think it will go above 2400 rpm or so.

I could be wrong as I tell my wife that I was wrong once.
