Even though a diesel will start at below freezing temps its not a great thing to do. The potential damage that gets done when the fluids are not flowing properly is why a block heater for 2-3 hours prior to driving is recommended. Best idea is a timer that makes the cord "live" prior to it being needed. When I lived in the arctic I had a block heater, heated battery blanket and an in car heater. Needed 2 15A plugs to keep things warm in the winter.
