When temps were below freezing I had a timer set to come on 3 hours before I drove the truck. It was not for making it start easier so much as it was to help the engine get warm sooner so I had some cabin heat. It was a 12 Valve Cummins, they are very slow to heat up. My 11 started and ran easily in single digit temps without the block heater.
