In the old days we slept in the back of pickups with canopies on them. We would use a Coleman lantern for heat, add some military surplus foam and call it good. People had panel trucks. I had a VW bus for years and slept in it when temps were below zero.
Before I owned a pick-up I used to borrow my brother's 1959 Chevy 2wd drive. It was primer grey with a plywood canopy. We thought that was really something for going on fishing trips.
Our first was a 1995 Sunlite 6.5 popup on a 1993 Dodge Dakota. Moved up to a 1998 Lance Squire 4000 on a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel. After birth of 3 kids, went to a 2006 Weekend Warrior SLC3505 and sold the Lance. Now that kids are grown, downgraded to a 2006 Arctic Fox 1150 (selling it) because we found our dream camper (loaded 2007 Lance 915) with all the options on it.
My very first TC was on a 70 Ranchero, it came with it. Talk about ma & pa Kettle.....hahahaha. I used the **** out of it, it had an 2 or 3 cu' icebox, 6 gallon pump handle sink that drained out the back, a closet, a couple of drawers, dinette bed at the front, and an east/west full bed in the C/O.
I was probably WAY OVER the rear 9" axle and the GVW, but it didn't seem to mind it back there, and was used for 5+ years till I got my 86 dually and an 11' Travel-Eze TC. Then it became the "fort" for the kids.
First camper was an 8' Skamper circa 1970, east west bed, ice box, hand sink pump, no toilet, tripod jacks on a new 1975 GMC 3/4 ton two wheel drive 350-4, 4 spd standard. This took me out west to BC in 1975. I sold the camper and truck shortly after arriving. In 1983 I bought a new 1983 Ford F-250 4x4 6.9 diesel regular cab and used it to haul a 1979 9.5' Security camper. We took this all over the northeast. Had a toilet and pressurized water! In 1990 bought a new Bigfoot 1500 series camper in Edmonton Alberta. I had a 1990 F-250 S/C 4x4 with 5.8 litre gas engine 5 spd at the time that was utterly gutless. Traded it in for my 1991 F-250 S/C 4x4 7.3 IDI diesel 5 spd which I still have today. In 2011 we bought our current 9.5 Northstar Igloo U which we carry on our '03 Ram diesel. Have had trailers between campers but in our travels much prefer the camper for many many reasons.
My first and so far only TC 2008 Lance 1055. started on a 2003 F350 6.0l diesel crew cab 4x4 longbed SRW currently resides on a 2011 F350 6.7l diesel crew cab 4x4 long bed dually
MitchF150 ~~ I had that camper !!!! Bought from friends of family for $400 +-'78. Ours was 1/2cab over. 1976 FordF150. Brot it home back of truck not even tied down. Those 'gas lanterns' were a trip. Used it for 10 years. Sold truck & all to brother and he promptly rolled it into the canyon. Only problem ever had was I Hated the 3pt landing system.
