Insurance companies track every call you make inquiring about coverage for specific losses. If you already have them involved, you might as well go through with the claim. (This regardless of whether you talked to a claims operator or "your" agent. Their first responsibility is to the companies they represent). My Dad was also in the insurance business for many years until he retired, and he taught me the very same things you mentioned. It is very true of what you said about not calling your insurance company, but to call your agent instead about advice on a particular matter as he/she knows how to get around the insurance company on that subject without involving their client
