I do need to ask regarding your contention that camping is free in the off-season. I've been in plenty of NF campgrounds in the off-season, and have always put my fee in the box. When short on cash, we've used a check; always cashed. Is this particular NF different in this regard?
The steel receptacle for payment is wrapped and sealed. All the pricing and stay limits postings had been removed. The Sheriff did come by and eat a sandwich, chatting with us. He drove 30 miles up into the middle of nowhere (forest) to get there. Every place is different. If the payment box is available and states to pay, then pay.
