A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

My first rv was a cabover camper. Still had old outdoor clothes line poles in the back yard. Backing up, I put the end of one thru the camper door. It was a big owie. Glad you are having a good time.

Hi everybody. WE are in Cherokee, North Carolina enjoying the good life. Today is beautiful. The girls are having a good time. I tried to back into the campsite far enough to get out if the road and put owie on the tailgate of the truck,

What a wonderful time we are having. The weather is great and the mountains are just gorgeous.

Hey Burch, if you're giving Monty Treats you might look at Purina Lite Snackers, available on line or at a Vets office. They are low calorie and my chucky Cookie has toned down her weight.

Good Morning FOOFs

I hope you have a safe trip Richard. I have to drive up to Wildwood, Florida today to pickup my motorhome. I had some warranty work done on it and they have had it almost 3 weeks. I have a 9 day trip planned in two weeks and I was starting to worry that the motorhome wouldn't be ready.

Monty's knee seems to be 99% healed. I have been taking him on short walks and he occasionally will go full bore and chase a squirrel. If I see a squirrel outside I won't let him out. Someone on the forum asked me if Monty was still on the joint strong. I didn't know it at the time but my wife has been giving him Cosequin. It seems to be really helping him. I haven't seen Monty limp or favor the leg in a few weeks now. I still don't want to walk him to much until I am sure he is 100% healed. The problem we are having now is he is fat! All those months of him not walking has really put the weight on him.

I hope everyone has a great day!

Good morning everyone. The camper is packed and just as soon as I get dressed we will be ready to leave. The girls know we are about to go somewhere so they are excited. Dixie really seems to like the truck, well for that matter she just likes to go, she's like her mother Sue. Just start the engine, open the door and say hop in, that's all there is to it.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close fro now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Hey Richard, a bit of trivia is the fact that the distance for you and the distance for me to Berlin, Ohio is almost exactly the same, somewhere in the neighborhood of 550 - 560 miles.

I will do it in three travel days, as I like to keep each travel day 200 miles or less, if at all possible. My cross country marathon days are over!

Good morning everyone. Well yesterday it finally happened. The neighbor's chickens were loose in their yard, Sue left the gate open in our back yard, Suzie and Dixie saw their chance and took off chasing the chickens. Fortunately our neighbor was in the back yard with the chickens and saved the day. Unfortunately now Suzie knows the chickens are there and she won't miss an opportunity to chase them.

I hope all is well with everyone and you are enjoying spring weather. At last we have spring and being outside is wonderful. Tomorrow we leave for Cherokee, North Carolina for a three day weekend. Its been a while since we were there and that place holds a lot of memories for us. Every year for about fifteen years we went there in the fall of the year with family to enjoy the beautiful scenery with the colors of the trees decorating the landscape.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.
