has anyone every went to Alaska in a pop up trailor?
  • Thanks for the reply, Sue. I once tent camped with 5 cats for a few nights. It was a hoot, as they all tried to break out (I was prepared and had metal carriers for them to sleep in). I was in the process of moving and too cheap to get a motel, plus I wanted to try it out. I've also camped with cats in a trailer, which was much easier and the cats seemed to enjoy it, but I had only two at that point. But I did have two dogs also, so it was nice and warm inside with all the BTUs from the body heat.

Sue, I just love looking at your photos. The one of Fangcat was cool - is there a story there? I've camped with cats and found it quite doable, as long as they don't get away (never had that happen, fortunately). Not to derail this thread, but did you tent camp with the cat?

Yes, Fangcat shared the tent with us if we were sure there wasn't a predator around. If we weren't certain, she stayed in the truck. She was a great camping cat - her last trip to Yukon was when she was 19 years old. We usually tried to park the fifth wheel so she could lay in the sun on the back of the couch :D

YES! Some years ago I read a trip report on the A-Liner web site where Bob ? took his Jeep Grand Cherokee and his A-Liner to Alaska. This was a very nice enjoyable trip report. I had several emails with Bob back then. He ultimately founded an A-Liner user group but unfortunately has passed away.

IIRC there is a link on the A-Liner web site for the user group. I think it is now called A-Liner Adventures and unfortunately you must be a member ($) to access it. :-(
  • I can't speak for popups traveling from NC to Alaska, but, as MORSNOW mentioned, one sees lots of popups up here in AK.

I'd second changing the tires (even just based on tooling around AK) and would also suggest: a) ensuring all the closure devices are working properly; and b) ensuring your screen windows/openings are in good shape so you can "open the windows" and still keep the bugs out.

  • We have plenty pop-ups and Jayco fold-downs up here. A Jayco was my first camper up here. My only recommendation would be to upgrade the light weight tires that come on all the little trailers. You can buy heavier load rated tires if you look around, they'll last longer too.
  • I'm sure it's been done. I wouldn't think you'd have any problems, even in bear country, if you don't cook inside it.
