Advice please - Edmonton to Phoenix in January

Have recently retired. Hope to pull a 40' fifth wheel from Edmonton to Phoenix in mid January, returning late March. Bad idea??? Any advice on routes to avoid bad weather or roads? Will I wreck my trailer pulling it at -25C even though it'll be fully winterized?Don't plan on staying in it until deep into Nevada. (Have 30+ years pulling RVs. First with bumper pulls, and last 10 years with larger 5th wheels.)
  • Hi, we have done the winter rv'ing for several years now. Pulling in -25 is no big deal.
Remember, they are delivered to rv dealers 12 months a years from factories.

We usually stay in our unit, but that's personal choice.

We travel to Great Falls. That's about 10 hours with crossing the border. We usually
Stay at Dicks rv. If we are nit pulling, we go to Helena. They have lots of hotels there.
Second night we go to Pocatello, and stay at, Cowboys rv park. Then from there, we head to Mesquite, or Vegas. That's a long day. We push hard to get into warmer weather.

I would strongly suggest you buy Next Exit, it's a book with all exits on highways, for
    Info when travelling. Great asset.
We stay interstate 15, to vegas.
Enjoy and PM me if you have any questions.

I'm surprised that you would consider I90 north of Butte to be steep, but aren't bothered by the Lost Trail pass on US93. There's a ski area at the top.

When I took US93 from Salmon to Missoula, I encounters snow flurries in easly June. But the soak at the hot springs on the north side of the pass was quite nice.
  • 3 issues: Weather. Weather. Weather. I assume you have the Alberta weather in control.

You have to be prepared to lay up if the weather is bad. If you take I-15 you can get nasty weather as far as Las Vegas. If you cut over to US89 and Flagstaff, bad weather can be well south of Flagstaff. If you run US93 through central Nevada, likewise almost to Las Vegas.

I've made the trip from Eastern Washington to Phoenix in a Class A with toad, in weather down to -11F with no particular problems. On the interstates, none of the hills should present a problem.
  • We have taken this trip every Dec 27/28/29 for the last 12 years.

There are a lot of steep terrain on I15 between Great Falls and Butte. We always take HWY 93 to Missoula then either I90 on to Butte or Hwy 93 to Salmon. From Butte you have the choice of I15 to Las Vegas OR rejoin Hwy 93 at Twin Falls, ID (Dubois and Hwy 22 to Arco). If you take Hwy 93 in Nevada DO NOT take Hwy 93 between Ely and Ash Springs. Instead take Hwy 6 out of Ely then Hwy 318 to Ash Springs, it is 40 miles shorter and a very good 70MPH highway.

Do not take Hwy 93 between Salmon and Arco in Idaho, it is slow and takes every twist in the Salmon River.... If you are going to do Hwy 93 to Salmon then take Hwy 28 out of Salmon to join Hwy 22 then on to Arco.
