This thread was started, to cover the subject of fuel availability , not prices, etc. For many travelers, at times, the availability of fuel, is of more importance than is the price per unit.

On another forum thread, the question was asked as to how far apart the fuel stops were on the Alaska Hwy. I said about 100 miles was the most I could remember. After making that comment I decided to check and see if that was still correct. We were up to Alaska, the last trip in 2011. Here is what I found, using mostly currently listed mile posts, for reference. Current mile post and historic milepost can be over 30 miles different, on the northern end of the Alaska Hwy. Current travelers, please advise of any changes needed by PM.

I haven't seen ethanol-gas in Alaska, at least in the south-central part of the state (Anchorage/Willow/Palmer/Kenai).

If your are going to drive the Dempster, fuel up at the card lock at the junction ($1.53/L diesel),
way cheaper than in Dawson ($1.69/L). Also if you can make it to Fort McPherson fuel up there ($1.69/L). Eagle plains was $1.75/L and it is dispensed to the nearest litre.
Inuvik was $1.83 at the card lock.

I just got home from a 6,000 km wander around the North, and have some fuel observations that are different than in previous years. Of particular note, all the gas stations in Watson Lake are the same price as Whitehorse ($1.329 for regular), so cheaper than even Contact Creek ($1.349), and much cheaper than Nugget City ($1.549) and Junction 37. Muncho Lake is still the highest on the highway, $1.969 at Northern Rockies Lodge and $1.989 at Double G. Further south, Prince George at $1.399 is higher than small communities to the west on Hwy 16 such as Vanderhoof, the best price at $1.289

I had to prepay in many places in the USA too, otherwise you did not get fuel.I tell them how much, they charge it, then get re-imbursed the difference.

We traveled the Alaskan highway (8264 miles) in 2010 and all MAJOR cards are accepted, BUT many cannot be used at the pump. You have to take your card into the station operator and leave it with him while you go back out and fuel your rig. He can run your card indoors so you are able to pay for your fuel. I have a problem being in a foreign country, handing my card to a total stranger, and walking away. I tried to avoid those stops. Using cash is one way and fueling often so you can be selective. They do have a lot of trouble with drive offs and the nearest police station may be an hour away. Have fun..Arnie

If you do not want to leave your card indicate how much you want to be charged to your card and if you don't use it all you get a refund or the pump shuts off when you reach that amount. In BC it is the law to prepay (Grant's law). He has a young gas attendant who tried to stop a youth from stealing $8 worth of gas. He was dragged to his death. The gas station is 2 blocks from my home and the young man was dragged through our neighbourhood and for another 8 km before the youth stopped. I still remember the drag marks left. The law may be an inconvience, but it does protect the gas attendants.

Going to Alaska you most likely passing through the Yukon and demanding real-time information about:
  • fuel prices
  • road conditions
  • weather
  • currency exchange rate
  • and more

Therefore is a small mobile web app you can access from your iPhone or Android smartphone browser at

www.rvnorth.com

It shows you the nearest gas stations from your current position ones you are up here. For the fun it also provides a RVer Chat.

OK, this is less expensive than in my area, it comes to 1.24 a litter, if you convert to canadian dollars. I pay my fuel 1.39 right now.
It looks like a bit higher than 2012 when I went, but not by much.

Thanks,

I hope that I didn't misrepresent how my fuel log could be used. If 2014 fuel was say 10% higher or lower overall then you would basically pay that differential.

Second I'd bet a nickle that a high priced area in 2013 will be a high priced area in 2014. Therefore manage your fuel purchases to minimize cost without getting into the situation of running low or out of fuel.

For example I ran from Eagle River via Valdez to Tok on the return trip w/o filling because I knew what was available in Tok on the inbound trip. ie I knew fuel was available in Tok and every station along that route was higher priced. Of course no one can guarantee anything for 2014 but I'll bet another nickle that relative speaking things won't change much.

The fuel log doesn't predict cost or adjust for local variations.

FYI Diesel in Canada is 20 cents/gallon less than gasoline. For my entire trip the average cost for diesel was $4.35/gallon.
