Alaskan campground north of anchorage

Picking up our motorhome when we arrive in Anchorage this August. Want to head toward Denali that afternoon. Can anyone give me the name of a campground with FHU in the vicinity and will we need reservations? Thanks
  • Probably the best would be Big Bear RV Park in Wasilla on the way to Denali. However, you don't really need full hookups. Denali has an excellent dump station and water fill at the entrance.

Remember, if you're renting you'll need to stock up on groceries before getting to Denali. Anchorage would be a good place to do it. There's a WalMart and grocery stores. Your rental place could give you directions.

I hope you're planning on staying in Denali itself. That's the best way to go. Take the school bus tour which is better than the commercial bus tour.

    Have fun!
  • Willow Creek Campground is about 70 miles north of Anchorage, and is right on a good fishing creek, with good scenery.

There are also full hookup sites at Montana Creek (just south of the Talkeetna cutoff), in Talkeetna itself, or in Trapper Creek. These are approximately 120 miles north of Anchorage.
  • do NOT stay at the Ice Worm RV Park in Wasilla. In all our years of camping, this is the first campground where I slept (tried to sleep) with a weapon beside the bed. Was grateful we had an alert guardian dog.

It is pretty much a place with full-timers. Lots of odd people coming and going, handing money over and walking away with packages. Numerous guns visible. That's the short version of the story.

Due to a flat tire we were on the road late and just needed a place to stay for the night. The place looked good from the highway but...

When does the sun go down in late August?

Late? Look it up and it changes dramatically as you change latitude.
Imo get the fhu campsites off your agenda. Get a rv with a generator so you're not handcuffed to the very few fhu locations available.
Alaska and fhu doesn't really go together.
