Around Chicago

Currently on road and will take 94 from Bismarck ND to Madsion WI.

From Madsion there are several options to my end point of Columbus Ohio.

I want to avoid Chicago....

Suggestions

Thx
  • This is a good route
    I-90/I-39 -> I-39 -> US-24 -> I-65 -> I-70

    But I like this one better.
    You select your route to I 80, East to Indiana 49 (only minor toll charges)
    49 to Rt. 30. SE on Rt. 30 to Rt. 33
    Rt 33 to Columbus. You have 85% 4 lane roads. Warsaw, Indiana is the only area that is congested. About 7 traffic lights. You also can take Rt 30 to I 75, South to Rt. 117, to Rt. 33. This is also good road. 117 is single lane, but mostly rural driving and no major traffic issues. I 75 to Rt. 33 has MAJOR construction just South of Lima. Avoid if possible.

    X2, there is just one toll just north of Rockford on I 39. Clear sailing after that.

  • Either do Snowman's route or take the SS Badger, the car ferry from Manitowoc WI to Ludington, MI. Yes, it could be pricey depending on the length of your rig but it is a neat experience and gets you out from behind the wheel for four hours. There is a discount if you take the midnight sailing, however you cannot stay in your RV.
  • As said above, I-39 to I-74 to I-70. Not only does it avoid Chicago, but it's toll free. Well, there might be one toll in the Rockford area.
