- lizzieExplorerSheer volume of traffic for one thing as well as some construction and the almost constant wrecks. Like I-5 in Washington and Oregon, there are just too many vehicles for the available infrastructure. We must travel from the FL Panhandle to Atlanta about twice a month and have sought alternative routes. US 27 is an excellent option and US 19 is not bad. For years we could manage the traffic by carefully choosing our times, not so much now. lizzie
- Johno02ExplorerAtlanta... Always like that!
- Sam_SpadeExplorerAtlanta is a big place.
Did you notice the NB backup at the same general place both times ??
It backs up south of downtown for the morning rush everyday and sometimes that lasts past 10 AM. - lap527ExplorerReally? I thought all the cars were on I75 here in Fl. Traffic on interstate and traffic in general has been horrible for the last month or so. We need lots of luck with all our travels!
- DownTheAvenueExplorerWith almost 6 million people in the metro Atlanta area, it is surprising the traffic moves at all. Then coupled with a public, mass transit system that does not serve the metro area, the people have no choice but to take to the roads.

Even the plague avoids Atlanta during rush hour. - HorsedocExplorer IIFrom I-285 N bound there is a tremendous amount of construction going on, lanes are constantly shifting and there are many rubber-neckers gawking at the construction. Ditto on the S bound lanes plus and new overhead road that will be used for morning and evening rush hours and can change directions depending on the time of day. They tell us it will be better, but that remains to be seen until it is all completely finished.
On top of all the other stuff going on, the Braves are building (have built) a brand new stadium very close to the 75/285 intersection.
We have poor design from the start. There are 3 interstates and a major 4 lane limited access running into the perimeter. It is only 6 lanes (three inside and three outside). It is like running four 1 inch pipes into a single 1 inch and expecting the water not back up.
On fridays it is jammed most of the day. Early Saturdays and most of the day sundays are the best time to come thru. Forget 285, just stay straight thru. Keep away from the right lanes - they have a tendency to end without notice. - M_R_E_ExplorerThanks a lot.
- mogmanExplorerI found 4.00am was the best time for me, northbound. basically no traffic at all.
