North bound through San Francisco

In September we are planning to head north on the 101. The question is what to do about San Francisco. I have a crew cab dually pulling a 36 foot fifth wheel. The 101 disappears in downtown San Francisco. Is CA Hwy 1 OK to travel or will it be better to head east and skirt the bay all together?

What routes are the big rigs using to travel north that have been on the 101 or the 1?

The route described using 280 and 19th Ave is a piece of cake. Just stay in the middle lane on 19th Ave and be prepared for some traffic with stoplights.
To the O.P.: does KCFD stand for Kansas City Fire Dept.?

This may look like a mess on a paper map but it really easy if you follow the lane advise on 19th Ave. Enjoy California Capt.

We pulled our 38' 5'r right through SF some years ago. It was fine, slow but well marked, just watch the signs. The SF traffic probably thought we were crazy. You mentioned Hwy 1, DO NOT get on Hwy 1 north of San Francisco. We did, accidently, and it is way too tight to travel with a big rv. Tight switchbacks and many 1 finger salutes. Stay on 101 out of SF, trust me on this one.

Thanks for sharing this, I was wondering about US 1 North of SF to Oregon, Seattle and then Vancouver BC... I guess US 101 it is.

  • If you want the easy way around San Francisco get on I5 or California 99 as far south as possible and go through the central valley.

Stay on the I5 and continue past Sacramento about 75 miles to hwy 20 and take that all the way to hwy 101.

Except for Sacramento this will be a very flat route except for the Grapevine section of 5/99 south of Bakersfield. Even this is not all that bad.
  • We are heading that way in August. Plan to get off 101 at San Jose and take 680 to Martinez Bridge (toll), then to Vallejo or Fairfield, then to Napa and the wine country and pick up 101 around Calistoga. That will avoid going through SF entirely.
  • On Avenue of the Giants, Ancient Redwoods RV Park is very convenient for your size rig.
  • We did this on the Harley a few years back. We stayed on the 1 north through San Francisco. No problems but we are much longer now. I plant to go to Fort Bragg for a few days and then on to Redcrest to see the redwoods. Ultimate destination is Astoria, Oregon. I will use the 101 to travel north of San Francisco.

  • Being a rookie Coming North into San Fran I followed the signs to stay on 101 north. Dropped us right in town but the signs were easy to follow. The extra traffic allowed us to go slow and be able to see everything on the way. There was no toll heading north across the Golden Gate. A bit stressful heading into it but turned out to be a non event....Not too sure about a Fifth but the big truck drivers seem to manage....Whichever way you go have a great trip...Mike
  • NB 101, in San Jose switch over to I-280. Take the 19th Ave off ramp to go through San Francisco to the Golden Gate bridge. This is the best way through SF. Not fun, but doable. Been a few years since my last trip on this route, used to be the free direction on the GG bridge, don't know if that is still the case.

To avoid San Francisco streets, in San Jose take I-880 to I-580, to the Richmond/San Rafael bridge to Hwy 101 (bridge toll). Either way will be lots of traffic, so plan for going through mid morning.

Don't know your destination, but to bypass the bay area and bridge tolls and get back to hwy 101, this route would take you seriously out of your way. If that is your choice, near Gilroy take Hwy 152 east to I-5. North of Sacramento, to get back to Hwy 101, take Hwy 20 in Williams, around Clear lake to the 101.

These are a few of your options. Others, are available.
