Bay Bridge Tunnel Wind

Leaving for Florida this morning. Has anyone crossed into VA useing the Bay Bridge Tunnel with these winds?
  • We have been across the CBBT more than a couple times as well. Always be aware of the wind. If any doubt, stay put. Don't cross. A day delay is better than being spread all over the road or blown off the bridge.

Being aware of wind direction is good too. Most of the bridge is in basically a N/S direction so as long as the wind is not broadside the ride should be OK.

I see that the CBBT cut off for high profile vehicles is 40mph wind. A 5er is not much more than an empty box on wheels. I would stay put if winds are gusting over 30-35. I would also travel with a full watertank too just to add weight down low & lower the center of gravity.
  • I think the OP is heading south. Depending on his destination AFTER the CBBT, there may not be any tunnels to speak of. Unless they've drastically changed things in the last year or so, once over the CBBT and through VA Beach/Norfolk, taking US 58 out to Emporia has no tunnels, nor does US 17 Southbound, that I'm aware of. The only tunnels would be if he took I-64 or I-664 NORTH back up towards Newport News or Williamsburg. So all he has to worry about is turning off at Cape Charles before he gets on the CBBT.
  • There are pull outs to check that propane is off at the Norfolk tunnels, best bet is to avoid them after you cross CBT they are poorly signed

I've hauled boats back and forth on the CBBT for years. If there is too much wind, they will not let you cross. Check CBBT.com for details. Still, a wind gust can give you shove out there. You are smart to take it seriously.

Ditto...be careful round the Norfolk/VA Beach area as there are low tunnels.Check the bay bridge website for an easy to use map that shows where not to to if you are towing something tall.
