Bear Watching in Hyder, AK

I just left Hyder, AK/Stewart, BC. I had planned on spending a day watching the bears from the platform decks in Hyder.

Turns out that I was about three weeks too early.

The Salmon hadn't started going up stream yet and hence, no bears to watch.

They say late July through early September.

Too late for me now, my return is the Eastern route so I'll have to come back to see the bears.

Either my husband is an excellent driver or our 2012 Toyota Tundra is an excellent truck---or maybe both, but we had absolutely no problem driving back to the Salmon Glacier. Like so many other roads in Alaska, Yukon and BC, take it slow, pay attention to flags and other warning signs and enjoy the views.

Did you go on up the road to the Salmon Glacier and the Granduc Mine? That's a pretty good consolation prize when the bears are in hiding!

X2 That road up the glacier can be pretty rough at times.

Yes, and also IMHO really scarey if you are riding in the passenger seat on the way back down!

We took the road to the glacier in 2014 and it was in great condition. Unless things have changed drastically, there is no problem and it is well worth the trip. The views are absolutely fantastic. When we were in Hyder in 2012, we did not go to the glacier, but made the trip in 2014. Go for it!

Too bad. We had a great time watching them late August last year, and watched 2 cubs fishing not far from our campsite on Meziadin Lake, even had a big black bear come through camp!
