Looking for any information on the best route from Bangor to Ottawa ? Our plan is to leave Nova Scotia and camp around Bangor on day 1 and then travel through Vermont enroute to Ottawa. Any advise or tips on routes would be appreciated.

Thanks appreciate the insight...I think we'll stay on US2 and cross into Ontario at Cornwall

US2 will certainly work. Might be a bit of a busy drive as on the map is looks like it gets a bit twisty in spots. You'll certainly see the real Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and up-up state New York rather than whatever you might take in from the interstate.

US2 has curves and hills, as does any east-west road in northern New England, but they are not sharp switchbacks or crazy steep grades. It's an important trucking route, very much suitable for any sort of vehicle.

In my experience, trying to gauge how twisty a road is based on a normal scale road map is a fool's errand, as the really twisty bits are usually so small that they look like a straight line, while things that look like twists are usually long, gentle curves. A sufficiently large scale map does give a clearer picture, of course.

Thanks Dale...the route I’m looking at now is route 2 from Bangor to route 89. Trying to decide whether to take 89 north around the east side of lake Champlain or stay on route 2 and cut through the center on Grand Isle. Looking to cross the border at Cornwall. Route 302 looks like an awesome ride but it will be quite a way south from our starting point at Bangor. Will save that for another day.

Last summer we did the reverse from Ottawa to Acadia National Park with stops in Montreal and Conway NH.

From I95 north of Portland take US302 into New Hampshire and the White Mountains. Good roads and some very memorable scenery that has the area on our short list for a return. Two lane roads but July traffic was light and made for an easy drive. In the White Mountains there are some hill climbs that will get your attention so take your time. Lots of campgrounds in the area.

Once thru the White Mountains head towards I91 north which will change to 55 once north of the border. Switch over to 10 west towards Montreal. Just east of Montreal change over to route 30 which will loop around Montreal and get you to 40.

Once you cross into Ontario 40 changes to 417 which you can take to Ottawa. If you want to try the road less traveled get off 417 and on 17 which follows the Ottawa River and will merge back with 417 east of Ottawa.
