CA Highway 299 from Redding to Burney

Does anyone have experience driving Highway 299 east from Redding to Burney. Taking a summer trip and want to know if its a good route for towing a 32' 5'er with a Dodge 2500 long bed. Thanks for any thoughts.

  • Its mostly a 2 lane road with some 3 and 4 lane sections. I have pulled my 40' 5th wheel thru it on route from AZ to Lakehead (just north of Redding) and there is no problems and there are some very pretty views.
Though it also depends on what time of year. I did it thru summer months. Winter can be a different story.
Burney is at 4300 ft, and Redding is at 700. There can be snow , depending on current storm activity and plowing.
You can always take a look at the CAL-TRANS cameras to see road conditions.

If the road is clear, and not Icy, then it should all be good.
  • No problem, taken that route many times with our 37' 5er, enjoy the ride.

  • Excellent!! Thanks for the replies. I can't wait to get my new Cougar out (and I mean the trailer).
