ca to pa rv park help

Going from Ca to Pa in Sept. Traveling I80 east and then going to I70 into Pa. Any ideas about rv parks and Walmarts to stop at? Pan to travel about 300 miles per day. Just a nice spot to stay overnite at most places. Hope to take about 10 to 14 days . Will stay 2 nites in Cheyenne and then 2 nites close to Omaha. At that time of year do I need reservations or can we just pull into a rv park pretty easily without? We have always preplanned our travels but don't really want to be tied down to any special date and place to stop in case we find some place we want to stay longer.
  • Plan your stops around 4pm along the interstates and you'll get in any RV park.

Purchase a WalMart atlas (near the checkouts) and they list all of the WalMarts in the country. Give one a call when you're near to make sure you can spend the night - and spend some money.
  • Some options:
    1. Desert Rose RV Park in Fernley NV (Passport America park)
    2. Flying J - Wells NV
    3. Sweetwater Fairgrounds, Rock Springs WY (make sure there are no events there then)
    4. Cheyenne, WY
    5. Windmill State Rec Area, Gibbon, NE.
    6. Omaha, NE
    7. Bald Eagle Campground, Scott County Parks, Eldridge, Iowa.
OR I-80 Truck Stop Walcott IA.
    8. Flying J, Lake Station, IN
I would wait to drop down to I-70 until after Indiana. Last time we were through there it was very rough and lots of construction. Maybe someone has a more recent update that can chime in.
  • Get a good campground directory to help plan your stops. Call ahead in the afternoon to reserved a spot but it shouldn't be necessary in September.
  • Scott County Park about 4 miles north of I-80 on Hwy 61 north of Davenport, IA near Park View. Bald Eagle Campground in the park. $21 a night full services including 50 amp service.

If you don't mind staying in a Walmart parking lot I suspect that any RV park/campground will be fine. I suggest you just follow your nose for a while - drive until you find something interesting or get tired - there are plenty of people who want to "plan" every trip and I suspect they don't realize they miss the real enjoyment of Rving. I doubt that a roadside rest stop is any worse than a Walmart parking lot.

I would also suggest that you create a list of all the Casinos all along your RV route. Most will allow you to park overnight even if they don't have a RV park.
  • we use the good sam campground book as well as checking the computer the night or two before and check http://www.rvparkreviews.com/ . Dick

  • That's a pretty wide open request. How many days do you plan for the trip, how far do you plan to drive per day, what kinds of CGs are you looking for? Perhaps if you filled in some details it might help others to help you with suggestions.
