Camp Verde to Bullhead City

Have been told we don't want to do 89A.

We have a 39' class A, with a toad. Trying to avoid long steep down grades.

Should we go up and over through Flagstaff or down 17 to either 69 or 169?
  • Either route will have 6% grades. I suggest I-17 to Flag, I-40 to Kingman, AZ-68 to AZ-95, south to Bullhead.
Some sections of 89-A are restricted to 50ft. total length.
  • Yeh...agree with harold1946 but 12 miles of a 6% grade going down Union Pass might turn you off.
  • Parts of the drop are 6% but it is only a 3000 feet descent over 12 miles. We drove that road (going up) last fall and it wasn't steep.
  • There's no way I'd run our 32'+toad up 89a through Jerome - way too tight. Signs at the base of the hill say don't do it. Followed a MH and toad thru Jerome once, and you could hear the language two cars back. That said, once you get through Jerome, it's not too bad. We always go up to Flagstaff and then west on 40. So much less stress.

If you really don't want to go thru Flagstaff, head south on 17 and then up to Prescott and pick up 89 there.

  • When were out that way we went back out to 17 and then caught 169 towards Dewey/Prescott Valley and then picked up 89 up to 40 a little before Seligman. Good road all the way no ugly grades or narrow areas, lot more interesting than the superslab.
  • You can head south on I-17 to 169 taking you into Prescott Valley then take 89 north to I-40 west. Easy drive.

Or..out of Prescott pick up Skull Valley highway through Iron Springs and then 96/97 to 93 north to I-40. Another easy drive.

Or. I-17 north to Flagstaff and west on I-40.
