Anaheim to Bullhead City with wind?

Wind warnings everywhere... We were going to take 57 to 15 to 40. Now we are wondering if we are better off going back 57 to 60 to 10 to 95. Your thoughts? We already sat out yesterday, but want to get there before the Thursday storm. Thanks!
  • I doubt whether there will be much difference -- you could check the point forecasts on the NOAA site for various places along the way. Those forecasts will provide wind predictions for both strength and direction -- obviously, the goal is to avoid cross-winds. So, for example, if the wind is from the northwest, 40 will have tailwinds and 10 will have cross-winds.

But the problem is that the forecasts are good but not perfect.

When I am heading out into bad winds, I watch the truckers -- when they pull over, so do I.

    Good luck!!
  • I would take the Southern route for one reason and that is if you do need to pull off and set out the winds I40 could get snow and ice from a storm.
  • Blowing hard on the east side of Banning Pass and see no immediate end. Sill better to have it push you on the 10 east to the river valley and then come back over at Viddal.
How are the winds in Q? That will tell you how far east this system goes.
  • I'd take the shortest route with a tailwind ;) Have a smooth trip and a Merry Christmas.
  • Start really early in the morning, before the winds start to pick up.

Most of the time, the winds get faster in the afternoon, and die down around midnight.

I would be checking the wind forecast in Quartzsite and along the river, and check to see how bad it is. You might just have to leave the RV at home, and hotel it. .

    Good luck,

    Fred.
  • We're in Bullhead City right now. There is a very slight breeze at 6:55 PM, but my "1weather" app says the wind should pick up tomorrow after-noon here. Temp about 70 right now.
  • The 10 route the big problem area will be at Morongo Pass just before Palm Springs the rest of the way out of the valley will be windy but workable usually, just slow a bit.

The 15 over the pass and through Barstow can be very ugly, in-laws used to live in Helendale and that was one of their issues was the wind.

The 10 has more options as you can cut over at Desert center which will bring you to highway 60 going to parker, you could even take 60 from Morongo pass and out through the Morongo valley to Parker. Slower 2 and four lane highway which in the wind isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Once on the 15/40 route that is pretty much only option.
  • We went with 60 to 10 to Blythe & up 95. We are happy with that choice. Wish it wasn't going to be so windy here over the next couple of days... Thanks for the advice.
  • Unless your rig is very 'wind worthy' you really want to wait So Cal winds out. Yes, winds tend to get worse as it heats up, but that certainly does not mean that nighttime winds can't be formidable. Frequently 18 wheelers are blown over in these passes. Sounds like you made it thru safely. Either my rig is the worst handling on the road, or far too many RV'ers drive when they shouldn't.
  • you are better to sit it out.
i have had and seen front's of trucks completely sandblasted bare of paint just driving from San Bernadino and Brawley.
