1. Go to your auto insurance and get a Canadian Insurance Card showing you have auto insurance valid in Canada. This should be provided to you at no charge.
2. Have passports for everyone.
3. Leave all guns and ammunition at home.
4. Have rabies vaccinations for dogs/cats. Birds and reptiles require special considerations.
5. Research the Canadian and US Customs websites about what you can bring into each country.
My experience is that the Canadian officials will be friendlier at the border. For Americans, returning home is not fun.
As a Canadian that travels to the US. The US border guards are great. The Canadian border guards...not so much.
Don't worry about some booze they won't bother you about it.
