Canadian sticker shock

This is our first trip to Canada to amount to anything. We arrived in Calgary Tuesday afternoon. First shock was the gas pump. 82l of diesel for $152.00. I understand the exchange rate and all but I scraped my chin when I picked my jaw up off the ground. We went to buy beer today. $30.00 (22.50 American). At home it’s $12.50.
I know it’s just the way it is but geez; these people must make some serious money just to afford basics.

I was stationed at Loring AFB in Maine in 1958-1959 and loved being able to go to Canada to drink some real beer.{mooseHead} wish I could get it hear in Ga.
When I got discharged in Dec. 1959, My wife and I drove back to Illinois via the then being built Trans-Canadian Hwy. Was a great trip and met some really great people on that trip.
Been back to Canada many times since and am going again next year.
Canadians are the best friends the US will ever have.Treat them nice and they will do the same for you.
Spend whatever it takes and enjoy the trip. Its only money and the government prints more everyday.

By the way, for you southerners who like Jack and are coming north after July 1, Canada is imposing tariffs on whisky from Kentucky in response to the US steel and aluminum tariffs, apparently one of the Republican politicos in Washington comes from Kentucky, even more expensive booze!

A) Travel elsewhere: Europe
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Japan,

B) Yes, population of Canada is 1/10th that of US. Australia is almost as big as Canada, with 10 million fewer people. No wonder they have road trains.

C) Territory = roads. Who better to pay taxes to create and maintain roads than those who drive them.

D) Only one other poster stated that our beer is stronger than US beer. We are an active group in finding new ways to brew 'new' types of beer.

We like our country.

Interesting topic!

Last year my sister in law spent a few weeks with us, she's Canadian born and has lived in Florida for a number of years. Each time she bought something she complained about how expensive it was compared to Florida. It got to be very "grating" after a while, in some ways we were glad when she took the plane back home to Florida!

LOL-no, not at all. Just doing a comparison pointing out that all of us have priorities as to what we get our hackles up over. Some of us will spend a half a mil on a Class A then won't spend over $30 on a campsite. Some of us will spend $125 on a site but will buy a $20K tow behind. Expensive is in the eye of the beholder, risk vs. reward, or however you want to term it comes into play in everything we do.

We just left Canada yesterday. Price of diesel was $4.50 US a gallon. $50.00 US for a $27.00 bottle of Capt. Morgan. Groceries in general are very expensive. Yes Banff and Jasper was beautiful. Also the people were upset and very rude to Americans because of the political tiff.

Lot of people here are hung up on this “free” health care issue.
Yes we pay more taxes, lots and lots over a lifetime.
BUT! I will never go bankrupt or lose my house because of a medical bill.
How many of you know someone in that situation?

Been there, paid their price, but just yesterday I paid $4.18/gal for regular gas here on Nantucket, Massachusetts in the USA. As we say, it's Nantucket, why pay less.

I think everyone forgets that Canada is the second largest country in the world and has the population of California. Products and taxes are higher because Canada has only 10% of the US population to run this whole country.

It isn't the 'Maths' that is wrong, it's the original statement that 82l cost $152 that is the problem. As noted above, diesel in Calgary is about $1.25 a litre, so 82l would be $102!
Sometimes I sit and think deep thoughts. other times, I just sit!

I gladly pay more in taxes for fuel and he sin items such as beer and cigarettes so that all residents of Canada have full access to health care regardless of how much money they have. We don't have people going bankrupt if they get sick.

All that aside, I have some dear friends who live in Canada and travel there often. Canada is a great place to visit, awesome scenery with awesome people, too.
