Central Texas to Gatlingburg

We are planning our first trip to Gatlinburg from central Texas. Looking at routes, we are considering IH 40 enroute and I59 and I20 route back home. We would like to stop east of Little Rock for one or two nights, then near Nashville for our 2nd leg of the trip. Our Arkansas camping has been limited to Petit Jean. I have searched online but appreciate any recommendations.

Any recommendations for camping east of Little Rock and near Nashville?

Any recommendations for different routes? We assume I40 and I20 will be much like I10.

All advice and recommendations much appreciated.
  • for Nashville I second Seven Points Corps of Engineers park. Water and electric. Pretty wooded area.
If you can wait for Memphis, Tom Sawyer RV park is right on the MS River. Not much between Little Rock and Memphis.
Northwest of Little Rock is Maumelle Corps of Engineers campground. A bit out of the way but nice park.
  • Lake Catherine SP is not too far off the Interstate. and is a very nice campground and beautiful lake.
  • Sticking with the route you have mentioned I have a couple of recommendations.

Near Little Rock I would suggest you take a look at Maumelle Park which would not be far off I-40 (Northwest of the city). It is a big wooded park on the river yet not far from shopping. It would be a nice place to stay over for a few days.

Near Nashville I would suggest you take a look at Seven Points COE, not far south of the city.

If you are not committed to going to Nashville, you could vary your route by going across southern Tennessee. For example on US 64 through Lawrenceburg where there is David Crockett State Park.

From US 64 you could go on to Chattanooga, or cut up across state highways to I-40 near Crossville.

We did the latter in September of 2015. Actually we went up through Arkansas to cross the Mississippi near Dyersville, TN and then dropped down to Jackson and on to US 64. Certainly not the direct route, but we enjoyed it.
  • My ventures through Texas were on I-40 stopping at Amarillo on the way to the Grand Canyon, Then Roswell, NM / Lubbock / Dallas / to Shreveport, LA, and last year Nashville, Memphis, Shreveport, Luling, TX to Beaumont, TX back North.

I remember I-40 in Texas as rolling hills the rest was no problem. I-20 was no problem traffic heavy around DFW area. In Nashville, We stayed at the Two Rivers RV Park (KOA, Jellystone and Two Rivers are next to each other) close to the Grand Ole Opry and 15 minutes to downtown. Nice Campground second time there will stay there again. Running the numbers about half way between Abilene, TX (taking that as Central TX) and Nashville is Arkadelphia (AR) Campground at about the 420 mile mark while Nashvills is 835 miles. Has decent GS numbers haven't stayed there yet but looks OK. Last year on the way back from Beaumont we went to Pigeon Forge, TN and visited Gatlinburg, TN. It was mid-August and was a Sat-Mon stay. The place was like a zoo, Lines everywhere and grid lock on the roads. We ended up skipping the shows, restaurants etc. and drove around the Smokey Mountains NP for the two days. Good bit of traffic in the park but not bad. From what we could see it looked like a nice area and we probably will return during the shoulder season when we get a chance.

Other recommendations if your stops change - I stayed at the Downtown Riverside RV park in Little Rock,AR - A municipal park nothing more than a parking lot with hookups but right on the Mississippi. Thought it wasn't bad for a overnight stop. Memphis stayed across the river in West Memphis, AR at the Tom Sawyer RV Park on the flood plain of the Mississippi. Nice place if isn't flooded. clean quiet place a quick 20 minutes to town.
  • Have not RV'd that direction. But looking at rvparkreviews.com there is one at Brinkley and another at Forrest City with decent reviews.

In Nashville, the KOA and Two Rivers are often recommended here and both get good reviews.
  • We have traveled from north Alabama to Utah/Colorado the last 2 summers and always need to stop for the night in Arkansas along I-40. I have not found anything between Little Rock and Memphis. There is a KOA jut off I-40 in Little Rock but some of their sites are good and some are horrible. There seems to be more camping around Fort Smith, and one or two places we have stayed between Fort Smith and Little Rock.

Never been from Memphis to Nashville, but I would bet there is more camping available on that leg than the LR/Memphis leg.
  • If you're willing to drive to Hot Springs, Arkansas......be sure and stay at Catherine's Landing......it's GREAT!!!
