For many years there have been many in this forum who have criticized Kino for not being Mexican. Well things have changed. When we first came to Kino 26 years ago the local economy relied on Gringos. After March when the foreigners went NOB everything came to a halt. This started to change about 15 years ago. A new deluxe road to HMO was built and Hermosillenses flocked to Kino. Previously it was Gringos that were building new homes on the beach. Typically a Gringo would first come to Kino in an RV. The they often bought park models or an old trailer and installed them on a lot in one of the trailer parks. Then they would build or buy a home. Mostly on the beach. As more Mexicans came to Kino the homes were being built by Mexicans both on and off the beach. The summer season is busier than the Snowbird season. The Government built bathrooms and Palapas on the beach and they are well used. New hotels have popped up as well as many rental Condos. There are paved roads in Kino and we even have one traffic light! Some new restaurants have opened and I expect there will be more. We do get some weekend entertainment from Hermosilla and Arizona. One weekend there was a Mexican Bluegrass group and Mark Mulligan is coming soon. The road to Punta Chueca( Seri Village) is paved. When the new Governess, Claudia Pavlovich, took over she had big plans. Unfortunately ,Padres, the previous Governor literally emptied the State Coffers. There was no money! He and his family were arrested last week. I am sure he is going to prison. But we should not be shocked. This is typical. Every time there is a change in political parties the x Governor takes a lot of money. Sometimes they annex some huge parcels of ready to be developed land. Or the Deputados build a mansion in San Carlos . Or they suddenly have a 250,000 dollar yacht. A si es. But now that Caludia has the bucks they are spending some in Kino. The Feds declared Kino one of the magic pueblos and made Kino eligible for Federal pesos. The beach will be one of 2 in Mexico with handicapped access.
So if anyone is looking for a spot to RV that is not far from the border you might consider Kino. The beer is always cold at our house!

KUnkaak is almost empty. Maybe 4 units. The place is really run down. Very sad! Kino Bay of course has their permanents. There are lots of empty spaces. WE drove past Islandia but did not go in. Upgrades? Repairs? Surely you jest. This is Mexico. You don't fix anything ! Ever! But KB does maintain the place. 2 of the small parks that are oceanfront are hoping to build condos. One knocked down all the RV spaces. The other just tossed everyone out! When we stayed @ KB many years ago they often were putting RV's in the overflow. Kunkaak was full in January/ February.

Del & Kate managed the old campground up on the hill where owner was making mezcal. He shut down the campground and they found this place to lease from a guy - out I guess would be South East of town toward the Mitla Ruins and Teotitlan where the rugs are made - past Tule and the giant tree - which is near where the Overlander RV park opened a few years ago. Del & Kate fixed this place up to have 8 spaces last winter but it is a large place with room for boondocking etc - and they may have put in more spaces .

Briansue: Tell me more about the CG in Oaxaca. Is it in town? Is this the one that opened a few years ago but was very small?

There are not too many newbies in this forum anymore. For them Kino, PP and San Carlos are nice way to enjoy a trip to Mexico without a lot of travelling.

Moisheh,

I think many start there ventures into Mexico with short trips to nearby places where many other Gringos can be found. Our first trip in our big Bus was to San Carlos where we stayed for a while - probably longer than we should have. Lots of great ways to get that first "feel" for Mexico. But then I encourage people to continue on with the next adventure to learn more and more about so many things they may have never known about. There is so much to see and do in Mexico that many in the US have no idea about.

Way back in 1971 I built a "hippy van" from a GMC panel truck and headed for San Miguel de Allende where my Aunt worked at the Instituto. So my first trip was to really get a ways down there. But my Aunt living there since the mid 50s made the trip different than for those going on their own - plus I was a whole lot younger then - I had no idea what I was doing. Back then there were about 200 Gringos in SMA and fewer than 25,000 Mexicans - things have changed.

We held off going to Oaxaca because of concerns about RV parks there and our size. Now that Del & Kate opened the new Oaxaca Campground there it is no problem to "big rig" there anymore. We wanted to go for years and kept trying to figure out how. We should have just gone.

I think it will get cooler in the months to come.

BrianSue: We have been to Oaxaca many times in an RV and it is our favorite spot in Mexico. Global warming ( can you hear me Mr. trump?) has really hit Kino this year. It was over 90 last week and we sleep with the AC running or the screen door open. There are not too many newbies in this forum anymore. For them Kino, PP and San Carlos are nice way to enjoy a trip to Mexico without a lot of travelling.

Rocmoc: The 2 of you are welcome in our home anytime. I will make my Green Chili Pregnant Burritos. I have some good stories about shoulders and Mexican Drs. So do you now realize you are not 21 any more?

We would not criticize anyone for going anywhere - do your own thing. We are happy when we hear people go to Mexico - anywhere in Mexico. But Kino is not our thing. Not that it is not Mexican. For us it is still too far north and too cold. We also enjoy wandering all over Mexico to see different parts of the culture. Last year we finally got to Oaxaca where we were able to see so many different artisans working on their works of art. We get to see all the different types of architecture. We sample foods we never heard of before. So many different cultural things that are all Mexico. The further down we go the more culture we find. So no knock on Kino but there is just so much more.

Will try as soon as the shoulder is well and the Doc & PT team allow me to drive the MH. Your beer is always cold and the local food is great. Also the off-roading (hard pack and some sand/small dunes) is some of the best to be found on Mexico mainland. You can leave from the park with always a kind wave from the local Police.
