Experiences with a Class A

Hello,
We have not driven our class A diesel through the mountains yet. Wondering how they do if there is snow in the passes. Has anyone had experience with this ?
Planning a trip from Saskatchewan to BC in October. TIA
  • British Columbia has winter tire requirements starting Oct 1:

Class A motorhomes that are built on commercial truck chassis and that do not have winter tires available can use chains or other traction devices. See Commercial Vehicles for rules.

There is a Canada/Alaska section that may have more about driving conditions in the Canadian Rockies in October. My guess is that if there are flurries and ice in the Rockies, it will also be cold out on the prairies.
  • At that time of year, I'd think you could wait out at least the worst of the storms and get more or less bare roads.

My class C has done okay the few times I've had to drive in some snow. (I realize it's not precisely comparable, of course...but it's still a pretty heavy and long vehicle compared to a car!) There's enough weight over the drive wheels that traction isn't a big issue in any conditions you'd care to be out in. I do suspect that if things started going wrong it could be messy before one could regain control, if only because of a large cumbersome vehicle on a road that doesn't magically get wider.

If salt is used on the roads, be sure to thoroughly wash down the undercarriage as soon as practical. Often the framework used on the hose part of RVs is not made from heavy gauge metal, nor does it have superior corrosion protection applied in many cases.
  • Have been in snow twice, about 3" on the Alcan taking it north in early spring and then at Steamboat Springs. It did fine both times though we slowed down and used caution.

We bought it in Colorado where the previous owner used it for ski trips and he had a little bit of a traction tread put on when he installed new tires.
