from West Glacier to St Mary (Glacier NP)

We will be staying on both sides of the park during our upcoming trip to Glacier - first at West Glacier, then on the east side at a CG in St Mary('s?) I know there had been some posts in the past about the best route to take (we'll take US 2 around the south end of the park, but there are several choices from there to where we want to go) - I can't seem to find those old posts, so - with apologies - could folks here recommend the best route to take? We'll be towing our 27' TT. TIA!
  • Good choice!

BTW - we grew up in Geneva, IL - about 40 miles west of Chicago.
  • Looks like the concensus is 464. Thanks, all. I think we will follow suit.
  • Been there a few times - for the RV I would definitely do the 464 !!!
  • I took 89 out of Browning to St. Marys and took 464 on the return trip. I preferred 464 to 89 but then I was driving a 33' class A MH towing a small pickup. Most of 89 was narrow with no shoulders and many, many curves.

I've seen a number of suggestions on the forum to take route 464 north out of Browning, which joins with route 89 near Babb, then drive back south along Lower
St. Mary lake to St. Mary. Although we didn't take this route, it is supposed to avoid the sharp curves and climb and descent between Browning and St. Mary.
    .

that was recommended to me years back and seemed like an easy drive.
    bumpy

Hmm - seems like several good options! How hard is it to find those cutoffs (especially Starr School Rd.)?

Not really because there are only two paved roads out that direction. :) :)

When we went to St. Mary in 2010, we took route 464 a short way north out of Browning then took Starr School Road to join with route 89 closer to St. Mary, thereby cutting off quite a few of the sharp curves on 89.
  • I took 2 to Browning, then 89 to St. Mary's. A few curves, but not that bad.
PS: Take a trip from St. Mary's up to Waterton NP in Canada. It is well worth the drive, which isn't that far. 89 north (becomes Canada 2) to Cardston, and west on 5 to the park. Make sure to go to Waterton, and stop at Prince of Wales Inn. They have a wonderful High Tea that is worth going to. We had tea with the most stunning view of Waterton Lake and into Glacier. Town of Waterton is quaint and worth seeing. Have fun
