getting to Watkins Glen State Park

We're headed to Watkins Glen State Park this weekend. Does anyone know what the best route would be coming from the Western part of New York? Our camper is 11 feet tall. Microsoft Streets and trips, Google maps and Mapquest all give me a different route to take and I'm sure my Garmin will give yet another way to get there. We're in no hurry and just want to make sure we stay on roads where pulling a camper isn't going to be an issue.
  • From Jamestown, I would drive east on 86 to Savona, up on 226 to Route 23, and then into Watkins glen, the park is not far . I drove the Greyhawk there a few times along 20a to 390, those hills are something fun. But not something unreasonable.
The hill on route 23 near Lamoka lake is a big one also, but that V10 loves life.
    Have a great time
  • Thank you Greydennyhawk. That's the route that mapquest routed out for me too. We plan on having a good time. Hopefully the weather cooperates and we get to hike through the gorge and see the beautiful waterfalls...all 19 of them!!!
  • Hey, just wondering, is there any downside to taking 86 to Corning, then 414 to Watkins Glen?

That's how we did it last September, but we came from the east. 14 was not recommended.
  • My brother married a girl from near Watkins and I have been there many times and to the Nascar races there a lot so I know the area real good. I 86 to 414 N from Corning is very easy drive with a big long down hill going into WG. 14 from Horseheads is another easy drive with no hills at all. Or you could exit off I 86 at the Coopers Plains exit turn left and follow that road all the way past (about 10 15 miles ) the Nascar track to the stop sign....flahsing light... and turn left onto 414 North about 3 or 4 miles from down town WG. Any way you go is vary easy.
  • We're off and running in the morning. Thank you to all that replied. Keep your fingers crossed that the weather is nice for our first time at Watkins Glen State Park!
