Going to Alaska? Be sure you have planned properly.

Another in a long list of people that have not considered all the ramifications of going for a drive.

If you are planning on driving to Alaska, do your homework. Check to ensure if you are carrying any weapons, that they are legal IN Canada. Plus..if anyone in the party has a criminal record, they will get turned away.

Gary, you are 100% right - PLAN, PLAN and RESEARCH for yourself at the RIGHT places - not on a forum of the uninformed.

I crossed into Canada this summer to go to Alaska with a 12 gauge shotgun with absolutely NO problem!!!

Why?? I PLANNED!! Did the research, filled out the form(1/2 page),had legal gun (met Canada's rules) AND declared gun at border. Took about 10 minutes inside and $25.00 permit fee. They did run a background check of course.

Just follow the rules (laws) and do it right and there will be no problems. This applies to hand guns as well. Also to food, medicine, etc.

I hope this will quit at least some of the "you can't take guns to Canada" crowd that don't do the research thus they DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT !!!!!

You're absolutely right. About 4 years ago I carried a 20 ga. shotgun into Canada (on my way to Haines, AK). I had the declaration form all complete for Canadian customs, paid the $25 fee, and went on my way. Customs inspected the gun, which I had in a case right out on my bunkbed for them to see, and interviewed me. It was easy and stress free by being prepared and informed. Same at US customs at the border entering into Haines. I declared the gun, they looked at my stamped Canadian declaration, inspected the gun, and sent me on my way. I was also carrying a box of about 100 20 ga. shells for the gun. BTW, it was a bequeathal from my deceased father to my son who lives in Haines.

We forgot we had a half bundle of firewood in bed of our truck. US border police took our passports, keys to truck, put dog in kennel, searched the 5th wheel, confiscated a green pepper,a half of a lemon and a potato. I don't understand how a border guard has or would ever have the legal authority to demand you as US citizens leave the country
to dispose of firewood?

Really surprised they would have you return the wood to Canada, the normal protocol is to confiscate wood to ensure it does not travel any further.

When I said misinformation, I was trying to be nice.

The only excuse he did not use was that "his dog hide his gun on him BS (dog ate my paper).

The true thing was that, yet another entitled american attempted to enter a foreign country with contraband because that countries laws do not apply to them.

What was it about the 10 or so Canadian flags that mislead him into believing he was anywhere close to Vermont?

Bet I'm the only guy on RV net that can say I used to run pistols into Canada every night for over 3 years.

(Ok, rest of the story.) Daily run from Seattle to B.C. with 2 or 3 dozen in a freight trailer. All hand to hand receipt by make, model and serial number and more paper work than any other type of freight. Including many types of hazardous. Custom brokers and CA customs used to have fun making paperwork matched up.

Canadian Customs...great bunch of guys. Couple where real gun nuts, they always wanted to do a visual "inspect" if a new model was in shipment:B

They went to law enforcement and "sporting clubs" etc. At any rate there is a lot more pistols in B.C. than one thinks.

This article is a whole lot of mis-information.

The people in this story were on a trip from Kentucky to Vermont.
1. The Thousand Island Bridge is in Alexandria Bay, NY - 200 miles east of the Vermont border.
2. The Thousand Island Bridge crosses from Alexandria Bay, NY to Wellesley Island, NY - not Canada. You must travel 2 miles more to a second bridge that takes you to Canada. Once you get to the second Bridge, there is NO DOUBT you are heading towards the border and 99% of the time you wait in line to go through CUSTOMS. You have plenty of time to turn around. Once you are at customs, and they catch you with some infraction, you no longer have the chance to "change your mind". This picture shows the wait at the border. -

You are right and I should have checked that date on the heading. That's on me.

However...the message is the same, right? Plan plan plan. None of the information is incorrect and I'll bet as much money as you'd care to, that there has been another gun seizure..oh..look..another...this one in September of this year.

What's to plan? Just leave your guns at home when going into or through Canada. Pretty simple.

And what does singing gospel songs have to do with anything?
