The Unaweep Canyon Road sounds like it may be saved for the next trip when we have more time. - 4runnerguyExplorerJoe B. has good info. Unaweep is scenic but slower, even though you have to slow to go through Delta and Montrose on US 50/550. Parts of the road south of Gateway remind me of the section of UT 128 along the Colorado River upstream from Moab. The route south on US 50/550 has continuous views of the San Juans as you approach from the north.
If you have the time to do the drive and stock up and fill up in GJ, there's no problem with pulling the Unaweep route. - joe_b_Explorer IIHwy 141 is more scenic as it is the Unaweep Canyon Road, but a bit slower drive for me. The Hwy 50 from GJ to Montrose is a multilane highway and then Hwy 550 from Montrose to Ridgway is a good straight, paved two lane. Turn right at Ridgway onto Hwy 62, up and over Dallas Divide to Placerville and on Hwy 145 to Norwood. There is a short pull just east of Norwood, known as Norwood Hill. Not a problem in the summer but can be a black ice special place in the winter. I really enjoy the Unaweep Canyon Road as a Sunday afternoon drive in our Jeep or on a motorcycle. Wouldn't be any real problem pulling a trailer either but I would tend to lean toward the south to Ridgway and west to Norwood route. Not real sure why that route would be my preference, but probably because we lived in Ouray prior to our move to Florida, so I am more familiar with that route from GJ. We just got back from spending a couple of months in that area of western Colorado
