Heading south from Tacoma early November.

Will be in Tacoma for work the month of October. Plan to start heading south November 4th. We've never taken the MH to the NorthWest and I'm concerned about our timing that late in the fall. I don't think I want to attempt Snoqualmie at all and thinking about going through Portland to I84 toward Pendleton and Boise but never been over Cabbage Hill. Passes normally don't concern me but the time of year has me second guessing. Any other issues heading south toward Moab and eventually Arizona?
Plan to run the same route to Tacoma but in early October.
38ft diesel with jeep toad.
  • I was going to mention 93 thru Nevada. Kind of a lonely road, but I prefer 2 lane roads when towing to Interstates.
  • SLC is my least favorite urban drive-thru. I look at it as 120 miles of misery starting at Tremontin, down to exiting Provo. Lots of traffic, reluctant to let you change lanes, beat up old trucks, crappy road surfaces, and massive orange-cone areas.
There is no alternative. I just caffiene up and head on in.
Well, actually I go by US93 through Nevada when at all possible.
  • Thanks for the info. We'll be able to hold off leaving for a few days if weather is an issue. Winds do concern me. What would be considered bad winds for a travel day going through the gorge? I'm more used to west Texas winds on 10 and 40 - mostly flat but extremely challenging on windy days.
I guess my other question was touched on...Salt Lake City Early November Heading south on 15, is there anything to be aware of?
  • I agree with obgraham beyond just the winter weather on I84 you need to keep an eye out on the winds too. Going via Snoqualmie may or may not be better then I84 through the Gorge, but just backtracking to get over Snoqualmie makes it such that I'd probably head south to I84. But check traffic conditions both routes before you head out and make the call.

For Oregon you want to check; TripCheck.com for Washinton you can check out WSDOT Real-time travel data
  • I run Eastern Washington to Mesa every year for 20 years.

Snoqualmie problem is the heavy traffic and speedy drivers (just over it yesterday eastbound).
I84 is an easier and less stressful route. Cabbage Hill is not a problem, just a long climb. Never found it difficult in my DP towing. That would be my route.

That said, it's all about the weather. Unlikely to be an issue in early November, but you never really know. Check the Oregon highway website and look at the cameras for Cabbage Hill, Meacham, and Baker city to see what the conditions are. If it's snowing, wait a day.

SLC is a topic for another day!
