We will be traveling to Dubois WY with a stop in Pinedale. Wondering about taking State road 28, the south pass, rather than 191 to 26. Pulling a 40 foot 5er. what do you think?

Thanks,

Ray

Route 28 between Farson and the junction with route 287 isn't a mountain pass in the normal sense. More of a very gradual climb and gradual descent over what appears more like flat land with the Wind River mountains to the north. South Pass is the route the Oregon Trail took over the Continental Divide, so there are some pull offs with interpretive signs along the way on 28.

If you have time, a visit to South Pass City, dating from the 1860's may be of interest. It's down about 2 miles of good gravel road. A few miles closer to 287 is the Red Canyon Overlook with a pullout on the left side. Another point of interest on your route is Sinks Canyon State Park a few miles west of Lander.
