Has anyone traveled highway 71 in Colorado? We will be going from Casper Wyoming to Limon, CO. Thinking about taking 34 out of Greeley, over to 71, and then 71 down to Limon. Our goal is to avoid Denver. We're in a 36'motorhome w/toad.

Thanks for any info that anyone has!

We ended up taking 71 to Limon. The road was rough from Brush to Woodrow, then it was ok the rest of the way. If we make the trip again, we will definitely go 470, or go over thru Minturn. Thanks for the suggestions!

Wish we had read this thread before today! We came through Denver and it was awful! Construction and lots of traffic and it wasn't rush hour!! we took 270 to 25. Never again!!

If you're interested in getting from Casper to Limon quickly, without a scenic tour of the state, and avoiding the worst of Denver traffic, just use the E470 beltway, from I25 to 287. It goes around the outskirts of Denver and its a toll road, so the traffic is usually lighter, unless you insist on going thru at rush hour peak.
I haven't been on 71 for 15 yrs, but wouldn't use it in my big rig.

E470 traffic will be lighter. Be prepared for the bill in the mail though!! A .motor home w/ toad--$$$.

While I have only crossed 71 a couple dozen times, if this were me, I'd look at staying west of the foothills and head to Minturn then catch Rt 24 all the way to Limon, Done this and it is a lot more to LOOK at when driving in the mountains than what you see on 71.

I would drive miles out of my way to take this route -- just so much more to see and do.

It has been a long while since I have been on 71 but it is a 2 lane highway and as I recall once you leave Brush there isn't much between there and Limon so make sure you fuel up in Brush. Good luck!
