Highway 24 in Colorado

Was wondering what highway 24 was like from Buena Vista to I-70

Thank You
  • After reading what Thunder Mountain had to say I wonder if since I am leaving from Canon City if I would be better off taking Hwy 9 all the way to I 70 and then head West. Any Ideas??

  • Thank you for all the replies, will be driving the toad to Las Vegas to check out some places to park the MH for a few months.

  • Towed over that route many times and found it to be fairly easy driving and very scenic. Good luck / Skip
  • I live in BV and travel frequently between BV and I70. I'm a 33 year Colorado resident and 12 year RVer. So, I'm no white knuckled weenie. I don't like 24 in the MH. Tennessee Pass itself is not bad at all; however, the road between Red Cliff and Gilman is a slow, steep winding road on both sides. It also holds snow and ice after many roads are clear. The road through Minturn is a bit narrow in a couple of places. If you are in a car such as my Miata, the road can be a hoot if there is no traffic.

I prefer to do 91 over Freemont Pass going west or east on I70. Freemont Pass is easy. One steepish pitch on the east and one switchback on the west. I have timed it both ways and the time penalty for going to Copper Mountain (91)vs 24 is less than ten minutes in the MH and toad. I think the distance difference between the two routes to I70 is less than 10 miles.

Other than being around 10,000' it's a fairly straight OK road.

    Thank You

Good enough road, Red Cliff and Minturn are great, but we usually take 91 as it is more direct, if you are going towards Denver. 24 would be a little more scenic but 91 is more direct.
