Hill AFB, Ogden UT to Colter Bay, Grand Tetons NP

We are scheduled to leave Hill Air Force Base on Wednesday, the 29th of May but not due to arrive at Colter Bay until the 2nd of June.

Wondering if we should take I-15 to Idaho Falls, then US 26 east. Question is should we stay on US26 east to US189 or cut across on SR 31 to SR 33?

Maybe we could just take I-15 to Brigham City and then take US89 the rest of the way?

Since it is only just over 300 miles, looking for anything interesting to see/do on the way. We tend to avoid places where tourist shopping is the attraction since we don't like to buy more "stuff" to bring into the motorhome. We like to hike but only along maintained trails.
  • North of Bear Lake in Montpelier, ID is The National Oregon/California Trail Center. Worth a visit IMHO.
  • First, head out the Roy gate. Opps, too much detail. On your way to Craters of the moon, you might be interested in checking out the city of rocks area. It's a little bit different, and can be fun if you like hiking exploring and climbing. I personally like Craters of the moon and think you'll enjoy it. If you take the time to hike and explore the park, it's a lot of fun.
  • Thanks everyone. We've been reading and surfing and I think we are going to go the Craters of the Moon for a few days. Thanks for the routing tips too. We'll check out Gros Ventre if we decide to go in a few days early. We'll be watching the weather too just to see how it looks too.

Original Poster here - how is Craters of the Moon - Lava Flow campground - will we fit in it?

Camped at Lavaflow a few times in a tent.
I wanna say a 30 foot MH can get in a few of the sites.

The lava tubes are neat-o and scary...like being in a monster movie.
  • We very much enjoyed Craters of the Moon back in 2010. If you go, Indian Tunnel is IMO the best lava tube. If you walk to the end, you can climb out a small opening and then walk back across the lava flow. There are two private campgrounds in Arco if you don't fit in the Lave Flow CG.

X2 on don't drive route 22 over the Teton Pass. Route 26 is longer, but no white knuckles.

We have used route 89 from Brigham City to Jackson twice on past trips. An enjoyable drive with great scenery.

If you want to head up to Grand Teton early, you could stay for a few nights at the Gros Ventre CG (our favorite) in the southern end of the Park. We arrived there on June 4th last year and there were only 20-30 sites in use at that time. You should have no trouble finding a site that would fit your rig. Dry camping, but they have water at the dump station. Watch for Moose along the river south of the campground.

IMO, it's impossible to spend too much time in the Tetons.

    ....

WY 22 Teton Pass is the one highway in this area that you don't want try in your full rig.
  • We used US 89 to US 189/191 (the I-15 to Brigham City to Logan to Bear Lake to US 189 to Jackson). It was a good route in 2010.

Never been to the Craters of the Moon, can't help on that. From the Campground Map, it seems it might have 4 sites which might work for you: CG Map. "Pull-through sites for large RV's and tow vehicles: 7, 11, 43, 45....sites are available on a first come first served basis; no reservations are accepted."

We stayed a few days at Massacre Rocks State Park some years ago. It proved to be a very neat place, very scenic with campsites on a 'bluff' above the Snake River with white pelicans flying & landing & taking off from the river.

10 miles W of American Falls, ID
36 miles W of Pocatello, ID
83 miles W of Idaho Falls, ID

    Very neat place.

Massacre Rocks State Park is located off of I-86 at exit #28, 10 miles west of the city of American Falls, Idaho.

At Massacre Rocks State Park: Remnants of the Oregon Trail are seen easily there.

Register Rock, located two miles from the park, is home to a huge boulder that holds the signatures of Oregon Trail emigrants who stopped for an evening of rest before continuing on their journeys. A scenic picnic area surrounds Register Rock, where emigrant name are inscribed, creating a desert oasis for the modern traveler. Remnants of the Oregon Trail are seen easily from either end of the park.

  • We are going the other way in July. Tetons then down 189 89 to Bear Lake for a few days then to Logan to Hill. Had done that years ago. Scenic route. If you haven't been to Bear Lake it is an interesting stop.
  • Howdy!

Howz things at Hill? (retired from the base in 07)

    Jackson Lake is pretty breathtaking.
Wish we were there now :)

Up 89 was always my choice.

I use to cut over at Brigham City up Logan Canyon turn North at Bear Lake.
Longer, yet a nice slower drive...enjoy and above all take care.
