I am going from Holbrook to Payson AZ tomorrow I am looking at Hwy 377 to 260 It is a lot shorter than taking I-40 to I-17 and across.. I am making the trip in a motorhome, pulling a toad. Does anyone know if this is a safe route

Beautiful drive. You will see the signs to gear down at the top of the rim around 7,500 feet before the downhill into Payson which is around 5,000 feet. The first 1000 feet down is the steepest and even that is only about 6 a percent grade.

It is a safe route and very popular with RVs of all sizes. However, you will have a steep downhill from Payson. It's very doable but use your gears and get into a lower gear before you even start downhill. It's a gorgeous drive. Enjoy!

If you take I-40 to I-17 you will also have a couple steep downhills so definitely go your alternate route.

The Phoenix area is in a low valley. There's no other way to get to it except by going downhill. ๐Ÿ™‚
