Does anyone know the real scoop on the marina at the Reef RV Park in Puerto Penasco? I mean, is it going to eliminate the campground, or what?

A big undertaking! When/if built looks like they will need to dredge endlessly. Cruise ships are huge these days, the land use will be considerable around what has been on the books and in the plans. It will be interesting to see how the winds affect things /ship movement once built. At a certain stage of construction Sandy Beach will not be Sandy Beach anymore. Let's hope this pristine area never fits right into the look of the gaunt skeletons of the buildings to the south. Oh, and I'm not your man to give good answers to this, I'm just an interested bystander.

I talked to Gus Brown the owners son 2 weeks ago, they will not be taking reservations for anytime after 12-31-14. That is of course right now current thinking. It could change or the park may be moved and reopened, it is all in flux right now

Here's what I'v learned so far. Keep in mind, this is Mexico, things change.Just after we got her around the 27th of January, they had a big ceremony for the "opening/beginning" of official construction. They've actually been working before that.The construction has been going strong from 5 am to 10:30 at night...........until last thursday.Last Friday I jogged over to the construction and spoke to one of the workers. They haven't been paid in a month he told me. The trucks stopped running delivering rock (there were about 25 of them). The tractors were still running cause they were cleaning up spilled oil that the trucks accidently dropped. There are still some tractors moving around and one or two trucks but nothing like it was.,The rv park is still open, although alot of people thought it was closed. Talked with front office (Gus) The Reef will stay until there is a buyer to develop the land for the marina area. Will the Reef be open next year? Dunno, hope so. Its anybodys guess how long it will stay open but it will probably eventually close.I spoke with Randy, the owner of the Wrecked at the Reef restaurant . He just reopened last week after remodeling and cleanup. Looks like his place will stay........(at least we hope) Great coconut shrimp.The Italian restaurant, Mare Blu, is still open and is doing well with tour buses etc. We ate there the other night. Great food.The dry camp area next to the Reef is closed. Cost too much to run and the construction would have interfered. Concha del Mar is open close to the Playa Bonita.Rocky Pt in general is getting a bit of a facelift. Calle 13 is now concrete road as is "Rodeo Drive" Alot of people in town for Presidents day weekend, Taste of PenascoThe Reef rv park right now is fairly empty. About 25 rv's.

We were out there yesterday and there was some activity out on the breakwater. Didn't see any trucks hauling rock so it looks like things could change.Streets in town are being re done with concrete for the tour buses. We were on the malacon this morning for breakfast and there was a tour bus driving through town.

There is a lot of money flowing into our little town in the way of infrastructure improvements. You will see some nice changes when you make the trip south next year.

How does marina construction effect the Reef RV Park?

Sadly with the addition of the new port/pier at the Reef we will be looking for a new location to stay. Have no desire to deal with cruise ships! We do have our memories of past stays at the Reef and climbing the sand hill with my dirt bike next door on the way to Cholla Bay. Maybe El Golfo!

According to what the backers were saying in print last year, the appeal will be to Mexicans, who will be able to cruise the Gulf of California ports with no need for a passport.

I'm actually excited to see if it will boost sea life concentration near the rocks, since it is pretty bare out there snorkeling in the sandy bottom.

Just brought 27 rigs in for a great weather week here in Peñasco, I will see what they think of the construction noise and all. Great Thread!

My dad was just down there last week. Talked with the guys at the Wrecked and they said they were staying......just did some painting/remodeling.

Here is a pic of the pier so far at 400 meters long with an estimated 1200 when finished.

Thank you for all of your input. Sounds a little noisy, but maybe doable. Glad to hear there's 60 to 70 RVs there, though.

The work has restarted. The workers got paid.

Is it noisy. Depends. For us , no. For others yes. Semi Trucks and large Cat back hoes.

You can clearly hear them during the day but kinda neat to watch.

Tonight they are quiet.

The park has about 60 or 70 rv's

Thanks for all of your input. Looks like we can maybe squeeze another trip or two to the Reef. But when you're at the park, assuming the construction is abuzz, does it greatly effect the peace and tranquility, fishing at the Reef?
