Hwy 17 from Wilmington NC to Williamsburg VA?

Any opinion on this route? Tolls? Do you need a pass? Alternate suggestions? We are headed to the Wilmington KOA. Thanks!
  • Drove from New Bern to Williamsburg on Mon and Tue. Went up US-70 - NC-12 (two ferrys) - US-158 and NC/VA 168 to I-64.

I avoided Norfolk throughout a 20 year US Navy career, and the 23 years since. And proved to myself that was a wise decision. Traffic on I-64 through Norfolk was worse than going through Miami on I-95.

Stay west as much as possible. The James River ferry looked busy but not a problem when we saw it from Jamestown yesterday.

I will be taking US-17 / US-301 up from Cheatham Annex to Andrews on Sunday.

Fine leaving Wilmington. Up the road around Windsor, it will be quicker to take 13. No tolls, these are mostly country roads (after you leave Jacksonville and New Bern) but well maintained.

A relaxing option - If you get on Highway 10 above Suffolk, you skip the heavy Hampton Roads traffic around Norfolk. Go up to Surry, VA, turn right (northeast) on 31 and take the free hourly ferry to Jamestown. Williamsburg is nearby.

It's called the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry if you want to google for info.
X-2, you don't want to be on 17 from about Dismal Swamp, north, almost all heavy city driving, and 17 doesn't go directly to Williamsburg anyways.

  • Wilmington KOA is a nice campground. Wrightsville Beach area is very nice.
US17 will carry you through the back country roads of NC from Wilmington to VA. Lots of small towns. It doesn't run right along the coast line either. Its inland mostly because of NC's coastline and how diverse it is.
There is another KOA in New Bern, NC along US-17 it is owned by the same family that the Wilmington KOA is.
    Have fun.
