Hwy 395 california

If passing through Bishop, CA - on Main Street is El Ranchito Restaurant with some pretty good Mexican food. We ate there twice inside 24 hours.

If you make it to Barstow from the east coast, there aren’t any grades on 395 you wouldn’t have already done more of. It’s a good road. It’s also probably also one of the most scenic roads in the Country.

There is a campground right behind Schat's in Bishop with the best Internet I've found so far. No problems streaming anything to your TV. Be sure to stop and see the Manzanar internment camp on 395, too.

It is located just outside of Lee Vining, Ca. Turnaround is easy as just above the Mobil station is a view point with a turnaround.

Depending on whether you are a hiker or a fisherman, you might want to schedule a few extra days for the Eastern Sierra part of the trip, if you can. World-class scenery and recreation. Great mountain biking, off roading, etc.

And May is before fire season, so you should not get smoked out like we did this summer.

Just made that trip in June with the HDT and 37' fiver. No problems at all, pretty drive. Only real climb is just south of Bishop, 7,000 feet. We held 55 in 9th gear all the way up :D

If possible, stop at June Lake area - very pretty and the mountaintops will have snow - hopefully, not below where the campgrounds are.

Lone Pine has nice public campgrounds and also a RV park. Good place to tour the old western movie sets.

Stay in Lee Vining and tour the Bodie Ghost Town.

We loved driving 395 with our 40' MH - no issues.

Ricardo CG at Red Rock SP has a few sites you could fit in. If you don't mind a couple of miles of dirt road, boondocking off Movie Road in the Alabama Hills west of Lone Pine is great. French Camp CG near Tom's Place (just north of Sherwin Summit) has some sites you could fit in. Old Shady Rest CG in Mammoth Village has some large sites. I believe there is still free camping at Glass Creek north of Mammoth. We've also stayed at Washoe Lake State Park north of Carson City, NV.

If you stay in Bishop or pass through near lunchtime, be sure to stop at Erick Schat's Bakery for fresh turkey sandwiches (RV parking in Bishop City Park).

No problems for you on 395. Consider Tuttle Creek BLM and the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine. Consider French Camp USFS near Tom’s Place. Lastly consider Glass Creek USFS ten miles north of Mammoth.
