Hwy 5 condition, LA to San Francisco area

Has anyone driven the 5 lately through the Central Valley? Is the road all broken up as usual - or even worse after all the winter rains? Considering bypassing the 5 and going the 99 instead, but it's longer and usually takes more time. (Though there are a lot more services available on the 99.)

Just how bad - or good - is it?

Thanks
  • A friend of mine owns a repair shop, and he really likes the way Calif. has taken care of the highways! ;)
  • Thanks to all; that's kind of what I expected. The trucks beat the **** out of the right lane from Mettler almost all the way to Tracy. Pretty much a repeat of the last several years. I figured it'd be a lot worse after all the rain. California - the land of extremes! We can spend billions on a train FROM nowhere To nowhere, but we can't fix the basic arteries that feed the state economy!
  • CA Traveler...That makes sense. They could at least make smoother transitions before and after each overpass.
  • On either 5 or 99, I hold my speed at 60 because the potholes and expansion joints are very tough on my truck, my trailer, and my wife, who is very light and bounces around in her car seat like a pebble in a tin can. I have suggested that she strap on a weight belt, but she refuses. ;)

I believe they cannot over pave those areas due to height restrictions. So cheaper to do nothing but there is probably more to the story...

  • Highway 99 with a trailer is my idea of a driving nightmare.
I-5 is fine but it is in California so you have to expect some rough pavement.
  • Now that is good news Buzzcut1, dreaded that stretch of 580 for many years.

  • The repaving work they did in the middle stretch failed in the last big storm and pothole city reappeared when I drove it month ago. still it was only a few miles of bad. In better news Westbound 580 has been repaved from Grantline at the 205 junction in Tracy all the way to Greenville road in Livermore. The hell that was the Altamont Pass pavement is gone
