Hwy 6 in Ontario

Would appreciate any and all information about Hwy 6 out of/near Burlington, ON crossing on the ferry out of Tobermory to South Baymouth on across to Interstate (?)west to Sault Ste Marie.
40' MH towing Jeep Liberty. Question being condition of roads and if any low overpasses, etc. Thank you in advance.
  • Thank y'all for the information. I'm glad the road is okay with no low overpasses. We once got stuck on a 2 lane that had an 11' railroad overpass. Fun to turn around a 13' high 40 foot motorhome on a two lane road!

I read on the internet about the price and then called. The lady told me it would be $121.50 for the motorhome and passenger and $61.45 for the Jeep and passenger ($182.95 total) I asked her again saying it was a high profile 40 footer and once again she said $121.50. Sure hope she knows of which she speaks.

We usually call ahead for reservations when we know we will be there on such and such a date. We then get there the afternoon before and spend the night in line. Have never been turned away from staying the night.

    Thanks again!!
  • Highway 6 around Guelph is a bypass -- just read the signs and pay attention.

Ferry from Tobermory is not cheap -- $16.50 per person ($14,25 for seniors) -- $90.25 for first 20feet of length and $5.25 per foot over 20ft. Your MH alone is going to cost $195.25. Toad could cost as much as $44.95. So your ferry ride could be up to $273.20.

Being as you have a long length, it best to reserve in advance so there is space available.
  • The first stretch between Burlington and Hwy. 401 is quite heavily travelled and is also a high enforcement area for speeding. Once you get north of Guelph, pronounced Gwelf, it is pretty much a good rural 2 lane highway all the way to Tobermory. It's by no means desolate but there's not much on the road between Owen Sound and Tobermory, especially once you get past Wiarton. Speed limit will be mostly 80 kph (50 mph).
  • No problems with Hwy. 6 to Tobermory or through to the Soo. Just make sure you get to the ferry well ahead of time as if you are late you will not get on or may be too long for the remaining room. One time with TT in tow we were 3 inches too long and waited 6 hours for the next ferry to get loaded first. It is also expensive. You will pay an extra length and extra height fee.
