We are planning on travelling to Sacramento from Bakersfield. Last time we used 99 and it was pretty rough. Is I5 better than 99?

I5 is pretty dull, but the only saving grace in that area is that you are in range of FM 103.3 -- a quirky little station playing "nostalgia music" from the 1950s. It helps to pass the time!

Yes, "Kings Radio" is great. I listen to it every time I go down there.
actually, I tune to 103.3 somewhere south of Sacramento, where I get a country station. South of Fresno, the country station fades out, then in a few miles, "Kings Radio" comes in.
I will miss "Kings Radio" when my son moves to Nevada, and I will have no more reason to go to CA.
Well, other than wine. I may have to make a special trip to Delicato Vineyards, just to get my wine. They won't ship to Montana!
Maybe I can find it in Nevada...

That explains my last post then.

103.3 in Modesto is a KAT Country radio and it's a Country Station.

I did 99 a couple weeks ago and it's a mess from Galt to Bakersfield. Contruction through every town.It should be nice when they are done in a year or so. 5 through Stockton requires a kidney belt, but the rest is ok for the most part.

I travel the state quite often. I-5, 2 lanes each direction. Biggest gripe, truckers and their 'snail races'. I think it's a game they play to see who can back up the most traffic! U.S. 99, my preferred. I think the States goal is 3 lanes each way from Sac to L.A. Lots of construction but a lot done too, 3 lane that is. I'm favoring 99 more and more.

Seventh Standard Road is better for connecting in my opinion. CA46 would be second choice.

Both I5 have their advantages and disadvantages. Personally I think they are kind of a wash. I go back and forth on which one I use so I say just pick one and go.

Hwy. 99 has more on and off ramps for locals, so you have to be alert for slow vehicles turning off and getting on. On I-5 you can maintain a more constant average speed. Both highways are equally smooth and bumpy.

We took I-5 during the Christmas holiday and the traffic was terrible south of the 580 interchange until we turned left towards Bakersfield. Trust it was because of the holidays.
