I 80

What are the road conditions on I 80 in Pennsylvania going to Vermont from Louisville ky, trying to avoid the toll roads across New York , only 50 miles futher going thru Pennsylvania, guess I am cheap.
  • You do not have too take toll roads in NY
Take I86 which you pick up as an exit off I90 just north of Erie PA
Take that to I81 In Binghamton, NY
Go north on I81 about 2 miles and Pick up I88 to Albany
from there you can take I87 north and cross to Vermont where you please
    Mostly rural driving.
I do not believe you will be happy the last 25 miles in Pennsylvania and through most of Eastern NJ. The traffic is a zoo. Once you get near NYC what is your plan to get to VT?
George Washington Bridge if you stay on 80/95 will have a $31.00 toll and you can be stuck in traffic through NYC for 2-3 hours.
You could take 287 N off 80 but that dumps you onto the Thruway and the tolls
Another choice would be to go from I80 in PA to I81 North and near Scranton pick up I84 but that puts you into the Connecticut traffic mess
  • Last time I was on I88, it was miserable. However, the upstate folks here have ensured us that the road has been fixed. Other than that and the construction in Binghampton, darsben's route is good.

The construction takes about 10 minutes to get through
  • Use 511PA to check on Pennsylvania road construction/repair.
Always assume you will encounter road work when traveling in Penna..
  • This is the route I would take also. 86 has been redone in the recent years, Binghamton construction isn't bad at all but the first 10 miles of 88 are a little rough. I was just on it a few weeks ago. 88 is a nice way to go very little traffic.
  • 80 to 81 to 84 to 91 into Vermont is not bad. 84 in PA is probably the worst; slow down as you approach all the bridges.
  • I came back 2 weeks ago on 80 to 81 to 84 to 91 and didn't have an issue with our 45' MH and toed.

Maybe I am missing something, but from Louisville, why not take I-64 to I-79 to I-68 to I-70 to I-81 to Binghamton, NY and then I-88 to I-87 as previously suggested.
