I81 to the 401. Parts of the Northway I87 have no cell service and if you break down no help can be dispatched quickly.
JUst before the thousand Islands bridge are 2 nice state parks for an overnight stay 1 grass point 2 Keewaydin.
There is also a very nice rest area between ext 49 and 50 where you can spend the night.
The drive over the bridge gives spectacular views
If you are not in a hurry the thousand Island parkway has a nice provincial park and beautiful views of the St. Lawrence river. you will join the 401 about 25 miles down river. Otherwise there is an entrance to the 401 just after you go over the canadian portion of the thousand Island bridge
