Most Mexican insurance companies cap US labor rates at $75 an hour or even $38 a hour. While this may cover repairs in Mexico, if you damage your RV, you may have to take it to the US to get it fixed. Repairs on RV's can require skills beyond a normal vehicle bodyman. RV repair rates in the US are about $125 an hour.Some research reveals that only 2 companies I can find have no ceiling on labor rates. They are Qualitus & HDI Seguros. If anbody knows of others, let us know. I found out about this when an acquaintence had an accident with his trailer and ran into the $75 an hour limitation. I will be ensuring my insurance next year will be either with Lewis & Lewis(Qualitus) or Mexadventure (HDI)

And, - off the top of my head - Discover Baja and Baja Bound have been selling a lot of HDI Seguro (not only for Baja - click on the "Territory" that you need)

Tequila was not talking about US brokers. It's all about Mex insurer. Lewis is a broker. Qualitas, ACE, HDI Seguro are insurers. Coverage sold by the broker is only as good as the Mex insurer. Yes, they paid out a reasonable value. At first Qualitas were very easy to work with but we needed the brokers, Lewis and Lewis to lean on the adjuster at the end. Nothing but good to say about Lewis and Lewis.

As far as I can determine ,all these Brokers have multi level rates which offer the option of paying a higher premium to qualify for Higher Labour Rates!

It's all a bit of a shell game as the Actual Insurance Companies are the people determining the final rate charged ,not the Brokerage firm!

If You request ,a bump up to cover the higher Shop Rate ,all the Brokers will be happy to sell You the more expensive coverage!

That said Those same Agents always Claim to Have the Best rates and or the Best Coverage! They seldom even mention the options available to You!

Nobody in Business would be dumb enough to advertise that They have the Most Expensive Rates!

Unfortunately most of Us buy Insurance based on the Lowest price first, followed by the reputation of the Broker, when what We should be doing is asking whichever Broker to quote on whatever coverage We expect to receive , deductible We are willing to pay out Ourselves ,plus Maximum payout on the Vehicle should a claim be necessary!

You get what You pay for when buying Insurance regardless of who You choose to Buy from ! Drive carefully and be prepared to shell out on the Deductible, and do proper research before signing on the bottom line!

Rob, after the experience of my friend, I will be ensuing I am covered for $130 an hour. Unless it is not drivable, you pretty well have to have an RV repaired in the US or Canada. In his case he took out the side of his trailer when he clipped a semi. Drivable, but the repair bill is $25 K US. The toy hauler is worth over 40K so they won't write it off (60% of value rule). They have offered him far less than the repairs are going to cost.

Paul - we were insured with HDI and I don't know how they would be with an accident claim, but on a total loss, they were awful and I would not recommend them to anybody ! We also got the agent- Mexadventure - involved, but during what we thought was negotiation, they made us a "final offer" and stopped communicating - both parties. They were very short on the truck evaluation and told us that the equipment ($3500 ) was included in that too-low amount. Now I know evaluations can vary quite a bit, but I found all sorts of comparables in the %20,000 + range, where they were starting at 13,000 - apparently trucks are a lot cheaper in Texas, where they got their "comparables" from. Cutting off communication with someone who is being reasonable is not something that should happen in a business transaction and it certainly wouldn't encourage anyone to deal with them again. -RYV

Insurance is a rip off everywhere. I have to have it and I use Qualitas. If you think your insurance company is on your side and will agree with you on valuations, then you will always, always be disappointed.

Not all Qualitus policies are the same. The ones sold by Lewis and Lewis were designed by Jim Lewis. They are much different than the policies sold through the Costco agent. We have been with Lewis and Lewis over 25 years.
