Itinerant Trip through US

We are traveling from eastern Canada back home to western Canada. Am wondering if we use a route through the US, what do we do for declaration of our new wine collection and other alcohol when we cross the border to US and then back to Canada?
I can't seem to find anything on the Government websites other than declaring and paying duties at each crossing. That wouldn't make sense right?
  • If it's over the (small) duty-free limit, then yes, you have to pay duties and any applicable taxes each crossing since you're considered to be importing it into the country.
  • Do you mean 'Trip Itinerary'?

Itinerant means to travel from place to place. Here it's being used somewhat as a descriptor.
  • I would ship it home or to a good friend near home rather than pay duties 2x and risk issues at either border. Find a good UPS or equivalent to box and ship.
  • I'm in the "ship it" group. You don't say how much you have but when you say "wine collection and other alcohol" it sounds like it's quite a bit. There may be laws concerning what might be considered "intent to distribute".
