- mbrookingExplorer79 is a good road. Two lane for most, but still a good road with adequate passing lanes.
- gsuttonExplorerthanks for the quick response.taking this road i can miss houston.
- NMDriver2ExplorerWatch your speed in the towns especially Franklin, TX. Speed trap just before you get into town. He likes to hide in a pic-nic/historic marker turnout right as the speed drops a mile or so from any buildings in town. If you look at the Franklin City limits on google maps you see a long strip that runs along 79 way past any actual town.
My cousin and niece live along 79 so I frequently stay in a Franklin RV park to visit both of them. There are a couple of good restaurants in town, but the Horse Shoe Cafe, on your right just pass the Dairy Queen (good burgers) and the Texaco on the corner, coming from the northeast, is a pretty good one for breakfast. - one_strange_texExplorerI would say any US highway and almost any state highway (though not Farm to Market roads or Ranch Roads due to being winding roads, though surface is usually good) is a good road in Texas.
If you don't want to go through Houston, you probably don't want to go through Austin as well. I would consider taking US77 south at Rockdale, then TX21 at Lincoln on to join I35 at San Marcos north of New Braunfels. Note TX21 joins TX71 for a few miles at Bastrop. - padredwNomad

AGREE! Austin has always been worse than Houston for me. I like US 77. - gsuttonExplorerWent ahead and took 79 and other routes to get to San marcos.roads primarily good.
Thanks for all the help
