medical insurance travelling to and from Mexico, from Canada

Question

Just checking if anything has changed. has anyone found a policy advocate that permits "add on" during the trip, ie using a month of one policy to get thru the States and then medical insurance in Mexico?

So far it seems we must pay the American (USA) premium the entire 6 months if we drive to and from (Canada to Mexico and back)

At 62, my wife younger our combined insurance rate from Blue Cross is approx 1900.00 cdn. for 6 months. The extra month extended by British Columbia MSP (Medical Service Plan) that make 7 months allowable out of Province can be added to Blue Cross after the max limit of 182 days (for Blue Cross)

Is there a better more economical way to do this medical insurance?

Have You considered Medipac? We have used them for several Years and Compared their Coverage to Blue Cross and Travel Guard and of course compared Premiums ,Deductables Etc.

They are considerably less expensive,have a decent reputation and allow ad ons etc.

You are doing the right thing by shopping around.  Try CAA, as I believe they will cover both you and your spouse in the US and Mx.  Good luck.

Hi CC;We're across the bay from you at Willis Point!We get our out of country Medical from Westland Insurance in Victoria and have been for decades. It's quite a bit cheaper than what you quoted and we're both a bit older than you.We also get our homeowners insurance and our BC vehicle insurance through them and they are very good a assisting us with our vehicle insurance refunds for the time we are in Mexico.Highly recommended. You could by a package for both the US &amp; Mexico for the first transit overlapping, then look for a US based travel policy to cover your transit back. There are annual policies out there that will cover you for a certain number of consecutive days in the US which will likely be enough, then just get a separate policy for Mexico or just rely on Medipac. Get a Spot tracker and their medical evac policies are much cheaper than Medipac. BC med will cover to what it would cost in Canada, but if you get taken to one of the more expensive hospitals in Mexico it wont be enough. Medipac is also only OK if you can fly. If you have a heart attack its possible you can't.
